The Art and Science of Beautiful Gardens
Landscape Gardening utilizes placement of paving, garden beds, seating and other garden elements, as well as choice of plantings, to achieve unique spaces within the property for gatherings, contemplation, pathways, and curb appeal. Inherent in this method is an outlook for the maintenance and management over seasons and years that will keep the spaces healthy, livable and well loved.

Artisan Project Management means making the most of your property’s assets. Whether enhancing, renovating or adding to your existing plantings, walkways, steps, walls, decks, porches, or fencing. To match your needs with a talented cadre of craftspeople to achieve the garden design with elegance, quality of materials, and the enduring appeal you will love.

Work DC Region Blog How is Garden Design distinct from Landscape Design?
I design gardens, install over one or many seasons, develop new and renovate established gardens, as well as do year around fine gardening maintenance in the Washington, DC area.

The gardens I develop seek to best use the particular space for welcoming people into the daily experiences of the garden. Introducing stone and other pathways, seating, patios and satellite patios, etc. within the garden itself is part of making a garden more enjoyable AND more manageable. Within the context of the space and the specifics of the environment, a garden is really a living work of art.

I am passionate about plants and use native and naturalized (introduced and well adapted without being invasive) plants. Recognizing ‘microclimates’ depending on soil, sun, shade, moisture, etc., allows plants to be chosen well and to thrive with less effort. Utilizing the wonderful array of foliage, shape, bloom, and color as well as the beauty of nature as it changes from season to season, a garden that inspires us and calls us into it week after week, month after month, every season, and through the years is possible on a standard urban lot.

My goals are to help my clients to create healthy, organic, lovely, undemanding year around gardens to enjoy every day. The most satisfying thing to hear people tell me: “I love to spend time outside in my garden.”

My primary focus is residential. But many of the principles that make a home garden livable and lovely, work also in our larger public spaces. I have spent many years of volunteer work on larger community spaces.... schools, parks, green spaces in the area.
